Mosaic Tile – Teach Your Children
Background: This is a lesson plan geared towards fifth grades on mosaic tile in general the culture of Catalonia. In this lesson both fifth grade art and geography benchmarks are incorporated.
Purpose: By creating a mosaic art tile students would imagine they were a Spanish architect and will be able to demonstrate their understanding of one aspect of a Catalonian culture.

Barcelona
The capital of Catalunya is Barcelona, and there’s many things to do or see in the city, with traditional activities as well. It’s a European city that’s rich with culture and is very exciting. Barcelona hosted the 1992 Olympics. Jazz music is popular in Barcelona and there are many jazz music venues in the city. Las Ramblas is the main road in the city, and it is always lively with people, noise, and exciting things to see. The Museu Picasso contains thousands of pieces of art. Carnival, Barcelona International Jazz Festival, and the Barcelona Streets Arts festival and some of their main festivals. Paella is a traditional Spanish fish which is rice and seafood cooked together in a frying pan. One of the most notable architects is Antonio Gaudi and Barcelona’s architecture is beautiful and unique.

Learning Activity:
1. Explanation to students that they are going to create a piece of art similar to Gaudi’s styles by which he was well-known for — mosaic art forms.
2. Prompt by showing example pictures of some of Gaudi’s mosaic art tiles he used in his buildings: talk about bright colors, curved lines, nature themes, etc.
3. Allow students to think about if they were to design their own building and how they would create their own glass mosaic tile and mosaic art to go on a floor or wall.
4. Give each student a white construction paper sheet (white will best display the colored tissue paper).
5. Allow students to tear the paper or supply with scissors to cut shapes to create their tile designs.
6. Glue tissue pieces onto construction paper to create individual glass tile mosaic.
Conclusion:
Give students a chance to their work to explain the significance of their designs, once everyone has the opportunity to create their personal glass mosaic tile. It is still important that the teacher be interacting with the children, although this activity does not require many intricate steps for children to follow. The teacher should be available for questions, while actively facilitating the lesson throughout.
An Ancient Form of Mosaic:
The earliest examples of the ancient form of mosaic and mosaic tile came from Sumeria, where clay made from pebble cones literally stuck to the earth’s surface.
